We highly recommend doing your homeowork before you hire and invite a sweep into your home. There are the websites that have a wealth of information and let you search for nationally certified chimney sweeps. Our favorites are the Chimney Safety Institue of America (CSIA) and the National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG).

CSIA Recommended Questions to Hire Certified Chimney Sweeps

The CSIA recommends that homeowners conduct annual inspections and cleanings on their fireplace and chimney. This protects against unecessary fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Use the following CSIA questions when you are researching certified chimney sweeps:

  1. How long have they been in business?
  2. Can they provide references?
  3. Are there any unresolved complaints filed within the city or state consumer protection agency or Better Business Bureau?
  4. Does the company or individual carry a valid business liability insurance policy to protect your home and furnishings against accidents?
  5. Does the company ensure that a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep will be on the job site?
