Hairline Cracks in Fireplace Refractory Panels

Many homeowners are concerned when they see cracked fireplace refractory panels. Are these cracks “bad?”  Are hairline cracks “safe?”  If so, how big of a crack in your fireplace refractory panel is “okay?” Doctor Flue, serving SE Michigan and NW Ohio, discusses manufacturer recommendations and how to determine when it’s time to replace cracked fireplace refractory panels. Read on!

What is A Fireplace Refractory Panel?

Fireplace refractory panels make up the interior walls of your fireplace. They are a cost effective, simple way of enhancing the appearance of your hearth. They serve two main purposes, to reflect heat generated from the fire back into the room and to keep heat from penetrating into the firebox causing it damage. Refractory panels are specifically built to withstand extreme heat and come in many designs.

Sometimes, Cracked Fireplace Refractory Panels Are Normal

Within the installation instructions of many manufacturers, the consensus is that hairline cracks in your fireplace refractory panels are normal and to be expected. Minor cracks are caused from the repeated heating and cooling, which causes the panels to expand and contract.

“This is normal, unavoidable, and will not affect the performance of the fireplace.” [HEATILATOR models: A36R, A36RH, A42R, and A42RH]

When to Replace Cracked Fireplace Refractory Panels

To know when it’s time to replace cracked fireplace refractory panels, you should refer to the installation manual. What qualifies as a hairline crack? Some manuals do not provide a specific width to signify when a panel should be replaced. In that case, the general rule is that if you can fit the width of a dime (approximately 1/16″) into the crack, it should be replaced!

Of course, there are other factors that contribute to a complete replacement, such as missing chunks or a panel that is broken into two or more pieces.
