3 Types of Chimney Deposits

  • Soot – Black or brown colored composition of carbon particles and ash with a soft texture.
  • Creosote – Unburned wood particles and condensed gasses form curly, flaky, or bubbly deposits in a brown or black color.
  • Glaze – When creosote build ups so quickly that the layers don’t have time to dry, it forms a shiny and tar-like glaze.

Why does a chimney have to be cleaned?

  • To ensure that smoke is being properly ventilated
  • To remove deposits that can cause chimney fires and a smelly odor
  • To prevent acids in the deposits from damaging the interior of the chimney

How do I know if my chimney needs to be cleaned?

  • According to the National Fire Protection Association, chimneys should be inspected yearly, as this is the best way to know if a chimney needs cleaning.
  • A chimney needs to be cleaned when:
    • Accumulations of soot and creosote reach ¼ inch
    • Accumulation of glaze reaches 1/8 inch
