Your Most Frequently Asked Chimney and Fireplace Questions Answered!

As the cold weather settles in for the long haul, daily fireplace usage is quickly becoming the norm. But with regular fireplace usage comes safety, maintenance, and installation questions. You talked, we listened, and Doctor Flue is here to help! We’ve answered some of your most commonly asked chimney and fireplace questions that will help you stay warm and cozy this winter.

FAQ # 1 – I have cold air coming into my house from the fireplace when it’s not in use. Is that normal?

Yes. The cold air coming from the fireplace is caused by a downdraft, which normally occurs with pressure difference. Air leaves the house through the chimney, but if the pressure outside the chimney is greater than the pressure inside your house, you’ll notice air rushing down the flue into your home. You can avoid a downdraft by always making sure that your damper is closed when your fireplace is not in use, as this should cut down on the downdraft. If you still notice issues, we can install a pull cord-controlled, top mounted damper to cut downdraft even further.

FAQ # 2 – My fireplace smokes when I use it; what can I do?

The first step is to make sure your damper is open. Although this sounds like an obvious suggestion, forgetting to open the damper is a common issue. If opening the damper doesn’t fix the issue, Doctor Flue can help! The more information you have for us, the better, so when you call to make an appointment, please have the following information ready: wind direction, the temperature inside and outside, weather pattern (windy or calm), how often this happens, and how soon after you start a fire does the smoking begin.

FAQ #3 – When I build a fire in my upstairs fireplace, the downstairs fireplace begins to smoke.

Although this is a common problem, it’s also a very serious one that can negatively affect the indoor air quality of your home. Please call us as soon as possible and we will come and perform a camera-guided flue inspection to help us figure out the root of the problem.

FAQ #4 – I heat with gas. Should this chimney also be inspected?

Absolutely! All gas appliances require annual service by a qualified technician, and most manufacturers recommend using an NFI-certified gas technician. All of Doctor Flue’s gas technicians are certified in both CSIA and NFI, and one of our simple gas log checkups can save you hundreds in replacement costs.
